I have decided to switch from VDSL with start to Rogers cable with start and I grabbed a Sercomm DM1000 Docsis 3.1 modem off amazon via modem market and they seem to be on best buy website as well for $139 plus tax. I'm hoping the DOCSIS 3.1 will solve the problems I had here around 8 years ago and I had to switch to FTTN. My neighbor next door with start has no problems with their cable connection however they are not gaming. I'm sure I will lose some ping times but hopefully not too noticeable as I get around 4.5-5ms ping times to the gateway on FTTN 50/10 depending on time of day and I have been told through some start reps that ping times would be slightly higher on cable but DOCSIS 3.1 might help a bit but should not be noticeable for steam gaming, rockstar gaming, battle.net etc..
It seems to be the best way forward for now as I can get my old $60 50/10 which is going up to $67 in july 2022 for VDSL 50/10 back if needed however I'm trying the same price as my VDSL cable package so 75/10 for $65 at first and I may try gigabit for a few months for when I may need it as I find that there's just no future left for FTTN speeds are getting too slow for my use and FTTH is probably EONS away for start.
I have been told there may be some more pricing changes coming up on start but I cannot quote the person yet. ie; 100mbit for $70/month which I would be happy with but the person was not positive if that's the route they are going.
I like to thank start for helping out in particular start emilia for being so helpful when I asked one night on the phone how to go about it and they will keep my FTTN on until we can make sure the cable connection works and goes well and then they will credit my account for what I do not use on FTTN. Emilia also explained they needed me to have the modem from amazon which I didn't have yet at the time for the serial and mac address before they can put the provisioning order through and it would take about 5 business days so I got the modem sunday and setup is friday june 3rd for me by calling in on sunday evening with a photograph I e-mailed them of my modem serial and mac address so it's their fault and not mine if they messed up that information.
The rogers connected for success folks in my building have been really pushing their product lately, however I just cannot trust those guys. Last best offer I heard was Rogers ignite 150 + Ignite flex 20 channels + sports tv package for $94.99 a month no term required, no install fee, unlimited usage Plus I would be forced to use their crappy as hell modem which I would not want to use. I feel start has always given me more value for my money over their connected for success program over the last 10 years as I find they are not really giving us much and you cannot get gigabit through that program.
I will know by friday when rogers cable comes by to set it up for me how well this works out for me.
Thanks for being awesome start as I did not want to lose my VDSL until we can make sure I would be happy enough with my cable connection.
For those looking to grab a sercomm DM1000 modem which does look like an interesting modem as it has 2.5gigabit ethernet port in it but I'm not exactly sure what chipset is in it but hoping it's broadcom can be found at amazon here:
