I know this originated from a competitor's site, but it's gone mainstream into the Canadian Broadband forum and it affects all TPIA's so I think it's ok to post here. A very simple form to send an email to your local MP about price gouging with cell phones and internet service, tell everyone and make a change: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r32342986-Tell-your-MP-that-you-want-lower-prices-and-more-competition My family and friends are all jumping on board. In addition a direct email sent to your MP adds more volume to your voice. All it takes is a minute of your time to let the government know we want change.

Thank you to the Start CSR that helped me last night.

I'd like to give a big thank you to Shawn (Sean/Shaun - however it's spelled) that answered my support call last night after 9pm. He was very patient, great to talk with. A pleasure to deal with. All three of my boxes went offline yesterday morning. I couldn't get them back online, and I feared the worst scenarios - failed firmware/software update, lightning knocking out the wireless on the boxes, etc. In stand-by, the boxes showed two red lights. As it turns out, my problem was very odd, never happen to me before. We're connecting via wireless until I finish running my network cables through the walls. Everything was operating fine all week and then suddenly, deadness. Our laptops were connecting fine, and my phone and my son's was connecting to the network and accessing the internet just fine. Ruled out bad router wifi. After power cycling, restarting the software, trying the 2.4GHz network instead of the 5GHz network, resetting one of the boxes to factory, etc., no change. As Shawn and I were talking, the idea to try my wife's phone popped up, and sure enough, it wasn't connecting successfully either. What was different about her phone? Turns out, she was set up for DHCP dynamic IP assignment, where-as all other working devices were set up as static. So I looked into the router config, and sure enough, and for whatever strange reason, the DHCP server had been disabled. WTF? For whatever magical reason, this setting changed. Could be due to a power fluctuation. No sign that anything else was tampered with, and no logins had been attempted prior, and only I knew how to log in. Was running DD-WRT, which gave me increased sureness (not 100% certainty) that it wasn't a hacker. Re-enable the DHCP, and voila - back in action. I usually set up static IP addresses for home and small business networks as a rule, but decided to run with the default network settings on the start boxes until I finished running network cable. DHCP can be a potential point of failure. Shawn and I both learned something last night. It doesn't matter that things worked fine for years, double-check or review the settings. Again, thank you Shawn! Sometimes talking with people and working through things can come up with the solution.

[cCable] Outage in waterdown?

At work at the moment, but all my connected devices have been chirping outage notifications at me for 30m. Had 2 outages over the weekend that lasted 10m or so as well. It's not really a huge problem, but don't think this is normal behavior.

It was originally listed in the channel lineup, but I understand there were licensing issues being worked out. Is there any progress on this? I know it's the off-season, but I tend to watch it more between now and week 1 than I do during the regular season. Thanks.

[TV] Go Apps

I see now that many online cable channel sites (and presumably mobile Go apps) now have the StartTV provider sign-on option available however, a lot of them don't work. I was able to view live CTV and TSN feeds online but some others like Bravo, Comedy, Discovery, Space don't work even though they do have the StartTV provider option. These allow you to sign in no problem but they come back as saying you need to be subscribed to those channels via my provider, which I am. Also, there are still many that do not yet show StartTV as a provider e.g. CityTV, Global, and Sportsnet.

[TV] StartTV Interface

I'm looking around the StartTV interface and I'm wondering if someone can answer my questions. If there is a faq on the Start site that deals with this info, please point me to it as I couldn't find one. 1. Is there a way to set the sorting of the guide to alpha, permanently (i.e. a way that doesn't revert back every time like the filters)? If I knew the channel numbers, I would simply enter them on the numerical keys of the remote. When I'm looking for a particular station, it's usually by name e.g. TSN1 and not channel #431 because I don't know what channel number is associated to which station. 2. If we could use the mic on the remote to search for a particular channel name, that would be useful but it doesn't appear we can do that. Does the mic not interface in any way within the Start app? If so, what can it do? 3. I'm confused about the Favourite icon. Is it to mark favourite shows or favourite channels? I ask because the Favourite icon is not always there on a particular channel. For example, on A&E channel #201, the Favourite icon doesn't show under The First 48 tv show, but it does show up for some other shows on that channel. If the Favourite icon is to mark favourite channels, how do you do it when it's missing? Not much point of creating a favourites channel list if you can't put one of your favourite channels in it. 4. Is there a way to just hide certain channels? I would rather hide a few channels than create an exhaustive list of favourite channels (assuming the Favourite icon is to mark a channel and not a program.) 5. Is there a keyboard or remote shortcut to add a favourite channel without going into info of the channel each time? Again that's assuming the Favourite icon is to mark a channel and not a program. 6. The Live TV category, and under On Now, this contains the guide icon and the first 16 numerical channels with many repeats. I can't see the point of that. Am I missing something? 7. Under Live TV, My Channels, this contains the first 25 numerical channels, again I can't see the point of this. Is there a way to edit what's there? Is this where I could add my favourite channels somehow? 8. Also I don't really see the point of the Trending category but some people may find this informative. Is there a way to remove that? Any way, seems like creating a profile doesn't change any of these questions. Thanks to anyone who can provide clarification.

I just noticed 356(FNCHD) Fox News is available. There seems to be an audio issue for FNCHD only on an 2017 nvidia shield tv. Audio through the HDMI works fine, as it does for other channels. Audio doesn't work when headphones are attached to the nvidia remote, although it works for other channels. Is this a FNCHD rights issue? Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Anyone not able to delete anything. The PVR is now automatically deleting shows we wanted to keep as we can't delete others we watched. Called support on the weekend and they could not delete either. Frustration regains momentum.

Seems no one else cares, but I'll optimistically try anyway; said by uid://1596693 :...we block ... ports... https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29557704-SMTP Yet every time I call support they say "We don't block any ports." I'd still love if support staff were correctly informed, and per-account transparency of port blocking were available. Would make solving the sudden breakage of my long time working STUN (port 3478) usage easier.

[TV] 4-44 errors for last day?

http://i.imgur.com/NBEpOmH.jpg Getting this error 4-44-128 since about 20hrs ago. According to intuition it's a weak signal (the STB is connected via 5GHz wifi, has been this way since the beginning). Internet bandwidth coming into the house should be adequate, 50Mbps package. Router is not far away. No other internet activity occurring when this happens. The screen freezes, buttons on the remote do nothing, and then this error sometimes comes up. Rinse and repeat once a minute for the last 20 hrs. Plz send help, I'm about to lose my mind.

Universal Remote Controls with Start.tv

$

Hello. This is a first-draft document I'm writing on configuring the Logitech Harmony Hub-based remote controls to operate Start.tv's Inspur IPBS 9510 set-top box. Start's remote control is a solid remote, but it is missing crucial features to allow the Inspur box to integrate well with home theatre setups consisting of a tv, start.tv box, and A/V receiver. Thanks to Rocca, I've acquired most of the pronto/raw IR codes required to control the Inspur box. I've submitted these codes to Logitech, so they can update their definitions. If you can't wait for a giant corporation's wheels to turn, you can set this up yourself. You will need: - A universal remote control. I recommend the Logitech Harmony Hub based remote controls. - Pronto/raw IR codes. - A way to blast the IR codes to the Harmony Hub. Logitech has some IR codes already defined for the Inspur IPBS 9510, but it's not a complete definition. For example, you cannot rewind or fast forward, reach the top menu, one-button launch start.tv, back out or exit out of menus, or revert to the previous channel. These instructions assume you are using a Harmony Hub-based remote control, and have already added the Inspur IPBS 9510 definition. The missing pronto codes are as follows: Home 0000 006C 0000 0027 000C 000A 000D 000A 000D 0017 000D 000A 000D 000A 000D 000A 0019 0016 0019 0016 0019 0017 0019 0016 0019 000A 000D 0016 000E 0D52 000C 000A 000D 000A 000D 0017 000D 000A 000D 000A 000D 000A 0019 0016 0019 0016 0019 0017 0019 0016 0019 000A 000D 0016 000E 0D52 000C 000A 000D 000A 000D 0017 000D 000A 000D 000A 000D 000A 0019 0016 0019 0016 0019 0017 0019 0016 0019 000A 000D 0016 000E 0D52 Rewind 0000 006B 0000 002A 000C 000A 000E 0009 000E 0016 000D 000A 000D 0009 000E 0009 001A 0017 001A 0016 001A 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 001A 0016 000D 0D72 000C 000A 000E 0009 000E 0016 000D 000A 000D 0009 000E 0009 001A 0017 001A 0016 001A 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 001A 0016 000D 0D72 000C 000A 000E 0009 000E 0016 000D 000A 000D 0009 000E 0009 001A 0017 001A 0016 001A 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 001A 0016 000D 0D72 Fast Forward 0000 006B 0000 0027 000D 0009 000E 000A 000D 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 001A 0016 001A 0016 001A 0017 000D 000A 001A 0016 000D 000A 001A 0D7C 000D 0009 000E 000A 000D 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 001A 0016 001A 0016 001A 0017 000D 000A 001A 0016 000D 000A 001A 0D7C 000D 0009 000E 000A 000D 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 001A 0016 001A 0016 001A 0017 000D 000A 001A 0016 000D 000A 001A 0D7C Back/Exit 0000 006D 0000 002A 000C 000A 000D 000A 000E 0015 000D 000A 000D 000A 000E 0009 0019 0016 0019 0015 000D 000A 0019 000A 000D 000A 000D 0016 0019 0015 000D 0D33 000C 000A 000D 000A 000E 0015 000D 000A 000D 000A 000E 0009 0019 0016 0019 0015 000D 000A 0019 000A 000D 000A 000D 0016 0019 0015 000D 0D33 000C 000A 000D 000A 000E 0015 000D 000A 000D 000A 000E 0009 0019 0016 0019 0015 000D 000A 0019 000A 000D 000A 000D 0016 0019 0015 000D 0D33 Last Channel 0000 006C 0000 002A 000C 0009 000E 0009 000E 0016 000D 0009 000E 0009 000E 0009 0019 0017 0019 0016 000D 000A 0019 000A 000D 0017 000D 000A 000D 000A 0019 0D5E 000C 0009 000E 0009 000E 0016 000D 0009 000E 0009 000E 0009 0019 0017 0019 0016 000D 000A 0019 000A 000D 0017 000D 000A 000D 000A 0019 0D5E 000C 0009 000E 0009 000E 0016 000D 0009 000E 0009 000E 0009 0019 0017 0019 0016 000D 000A 0019 000A 000D 0017 000D 000A 000D 000A 0019 0D5E Start TV 0000 006C 0000 0027 000D 0009 000E 000A 000D 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 0019 0016 0019 0016 0019 0017 0019 0009 000E 0016 0019 0016 000E 0D51 000D 0009 000E 000A 000D 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 0019 0016 0019 0016 0019 0017 0019 0009 000E 0016 0019 0016 000E 0D51 000D 0009 000E 000A 000D 0016 000E 0009 000E 000A 000D 000A 0019 0016 0019 0016 0019 0017 0019 0009 000E 0016 0019 0016 000E 0D51 At this time, there is no one-button record. I'm hoping there is a pronto code for this, but I suspect Inspur will need to add a suitable IR code, and the necessary software processing to record the active program when the code is received. Should this change, I will update this document. In order to teach the Harmony Hub these codes, you will need to use an IR Blaster. Many smartphones are already equipped with one, while other smartphones may require an add-on IR blaster. If your phone doesn't have an IR blaster, the least expensive and quickest way to proceed is to borrow one that has one. I used an android app called IR Remote Creator by keuw.com. http://www.keuwl.com/apps/049remotecreator/ Caveat: I noticed that sometimes learning didn't work, which I attributed to irregularities in the way the Harmony Hub receives and processes the IR codes. I found that I would often have to re-trigger the IR code three times in order to get a successful learn. Once you've taught one Harmony Hub successfully, you can easily teach additional Harmony Hubs using the first hub. Using IR Remote Creator: - enter creator mode (button: pen pushing down on paper) - create 6 buttons using the icon to the left of the trashcan, located in the left toolbar - move the buttons around to suit For each button: - click on the button to select - click on the second-last option in the left toolbar: Text - name the button to one of the following: Home, Start TV, Rewind, Fast Forward, Back/Exit, Last Channel - click on the last option in the left toolbar: IR - change the Format to: RAW - click on edit - paste the appropriate pronto/raw code into the entry box and press ok. Note: this field is only for raw or hex codes, not for text. - press the test button while pointing the phone at the Inspur box to verify the code works - press the last option in the left toolbar again: IR Once the six buttons are programmed, it's time to teach the Harmony Hub - launch the harmony app on your phone, log in, and select the hub you wish to configure - click on Devices - click on Edit Devices - click on Inspur DVR - click on ADD/FIX COMMAND For some buttons, a simple fix is all that's required. For others, you need to create new commands. Either select an existing command, or select COMMAND MISSING. If the command is missing, you'll need to create a title for the command. Proceed through the wizard to teach the Hub the IR code, using your phone to send the IR code for each button. Once all IR codes have been taught to the Hub, press the X in the upper-right corner of the app to go back to the Activities/Devices screen. To set up the activities: - click on Activities - click on Edit Activities - click on the appropriate activity (eg: Watch TV) For each button: - select the button on the graphical picture of the remote you wish to configure - select the device: Inspur DVR box - select the command you wish to assign I assigned the top menu to the red button, and logically, I assigned Start TV to the green button. Don't forget, you can also assign play or pause to the stop button, since pausing is essentially like stopping. Once all buttons are configured, press the X in the upper-right corner of the app. Test the new remote configuration. Thank you Rocca and Inspur for providing the pronto/raw codes.

Who's watching? - improvements

Hello Rocca, Now that we've had several weeks to enjoy Start.tv, we've found one feature that needs some additional work. Having multiple profiles is great - my wife and I use the same profile, my daughter has her own profile, and we're going to create a profile for our son. Great idea. However, every time we turn it on, we're asked to pick who's watching. Our bedroom TV - we always use our profile, never our daughter's or son's. In the living room, it's mixed-use use.. In the playroom, it's either us or our son, maybe once in a while our daughter. It would be nice if we could set the system to remember the last-used profile per device so we don't have to fiddle with profile. This way our bedroom would always be our profile, the living room and play room defaults to whomever used it last and there's a good chance the right profile will be automatically set. A quick display at the beginning showing the active profile would give us the notice we need to decide if we need to change the profile. What do you think?
