[cCable] New to the family! Quick speed question?

$

Hey all! Have jumped ship from Cogeco to Start. Should have been hooked up yesterday, but there was a mixup with the cable modem MAC which delayed things. Am now happily up and running! Quick question - we're on the 30/10 tier. Have just run two speedtests (speedof.me and speedtest.net), and we're getting more like 40/10. I'm not necessarily surprised given that Cogeco's recently bumped their tier to 40, but given that things are advertised as 30/10 on the Start site I thought I'd just double check that there's not a chance we're accidentally on the 60Mbps down tier (and getting slower than advertised speed?). Otherwise it's only been about 5 minutes, but working well so far!

I've been having some major speed issues over the last two nights. Pages timing out, pings timing out etc. Feels like i'm on dial up. Has there been any maintenance going on or any other issues?

DHCP Issues?

Hey - is there any DHCP issues going on at the moment? Since around 5pm last night, my cable modem has been unable to assign an IP address to my router (or a PC when connected direct) until I restart the modem, then it can grab an IP and I'm fine again for about 4 hrs or so, then the same will happen again. Tried hard reset of the modem - no obvious errors in the modem event log either. All the levels on the modem look fine throughout, just the IP drops and isn't able to get another one (albeit the same IP) till I reboot the modem..... Called in and logged a ticket, but curious if anyone is seeing any problems?

[rCable] Switching from grandfathered "Plus" 25/10 plan to 60/10

I couldn't revive the old Jul 2014 thread: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29380250-rCable-Switching-from-grandfathered-Plus-plan-to-60-10 So I am asking this again because I never made the switch. If I switch now from one of the grandfathered "Plus" plans (which are really 150/10 and throttled down by Start) to the current 60/10 plan will my modem get a new 60/10 profile or I will still be on the 150/10 and throttled by Start to 60/10? My current plan is called "Home Cable Legacy 25/10 (150GB)". In 2014 rocca said that the modem profile would be changed to 60/10. Is it still the case? AFAIK the tariffs for 150/10 and 60/10 are the same.

Had an appointment for between 8 and 11, guy shows up @ 9:45, spends about 10 minutes and says I am good to go and should be online 10 to 15 minutes after he leaves. Actually says my single is to strong and cuts it back to where it should be. 15 minutes after he leaves I am online. It was a picture perfect install. I just moved in here and this is my second time round with start, impressed both times. Good job start. Just got a follow up call from a very nice lady, are you single? lmao

Hi Start, Been a customer for a while and have two questions. 1. Can I change my profile to a higher speed and test it out for a month, paying for the new rate, but if I don't want/need it can I change back to my old speed for the next month? 2. Can the 100Mbs profile be used with a DCM476?

[rCable] Slow speeds to OVH QC datacenter

I have a server hosted at the Beauharnois "BHS" datacenter, and I'm noticing some slow download speeds on my rCable connection. I currently have the 100/10 connection from Start. The test files for the datacenter are hosted here: http://bhs.proof.ovh.net/files/ I only get about 800-900 KB/sec from those test files, which matches the speeds I'm getting from the server. On the server, I've tested downloading other test files to make sure it wasn't on that side. I've tested various test files using wget: - Electronic Box's test file: http://lg.ebox.ca/25MB.test - Digital Ocean's test file: http://speedtest-tor1.digitalocean.com/100mb.test - OVH's BHS test file: http://bhs.proof.ovh.net/files/100Mio.dat On remote server using wget: Electronic Box's test file averaged 11.2 MB/sec. Digital Ocean's test file averaged 11.1 MB/sec. OVH's test file averaged 11.2 MB/sec (to be expected) On my home connection using wget: Electronic Box's test file averaged 9.91 MB/sec. Digital Ocean's test file averaged 10.1 MB/sec. OVH's test file averaged 950 KB/sec Here's the trace route from me to the OVH BVS test server: traceroute to bhs.proof.ovh.net (192.99.19.165), 64 hops max, 72 byte packets 1 gateway (10.0.1.1) 0.620 ms 0.382 ms 0.319 ms 2 10.104.255.1 (10.104.255.1) 18.833 ms 12.908 ms 10.464 ms 3 van58-6-240-145.dynamic.rogerstelecom.net (209.148.240.145) 16.265 ms 12.128 ms 23.749 ms 4 69.63.249.69 (69.63.249.69) 15.298 ms 13.694 ms 13.571 ms 5 ovh.ip4.torontointernetxchange.net (206.108.34.189) 25.653 ms 16.576 ms 18.492 ms 6 bhs-g2-a9.qc.ca (178.32.135.71) 27.075 ms 20.426 ms 28.490 ms 7 bhs-3a-a9.qc.ca (198.27.73.94) 26.364 ms 22.238 ms 21.386 ms 8 bhs.proof.ovh.net (192.99.19.165) 19.090 ms 20.780 ms 28.035 ms It appears that there are some peering issues between me and the OVH Quebec datacenter. Is it possible for someone at Start to look into it? It would be interesting to see if anyone else is also seeing the slow speeds from that datacenter.

Start.ca VoIP initial thoughts

I ported my number from Bell Canada in the Barry's Bay, ON, exchange (613-756-XXXX) to a small VoIP provider in Eastern Ontario (Voice2Net.ca), but they have been unable (for 30+ days) to resolve the issue that local inbound callers with 'Anonymous' CallerID do not get a ring tone, even thought my phone rings and the calls come through. So, I went looking for an alternate. Many said they could not port my (now VoIP) inbound DID because it was a Barry's Bay exchange. Start.ca said they could. Within a few hours, the account was setup, the customer portal populated, and credentials emailed to me. I was able to register the VoIP adapter and test outgoing calls with success (incoming call test will have to way for the port to complete). --SUPPORT DOCUMENTATION-- The instructions in the email included 'Should you need to reconfigure your adapter later or setup a different device with your SIP authentication details, the login name is "xxxxxxxxx", the password is "xxxxxxxx" and the SIP server name is "voip.start.ca". If you require any assistance getting setup please contact us or you can visit our support pages online at www.start.ca/support'. Unfortunately the support pages at start.ca regarding VoIP are thin - very, thin - to the point of being non-existent regarding VoIP. This needs improvement - or a different email should be sent out initially. Where are the star-codes to enable and disable features? --CALLER ID-- When setting up the account I requested that my Caller ID appear as 'D M Smith' (example), but I was told I would set it at my end. Unfortunately it was setup as 'D Smith', and there appears to be no way for me to change it at my end (and no documentation is available in the non-existent support pages). Overall, the customer service was friendly and efficient (appears to be Ontario-based), but gave some apparently incorrect information. I am hoping and expecting great things from this up-and-coming Canadian VoIP provider. I intend to post a follow-up after the port.

Getting extremely weird packet loss, via mtrs or pings, but actual connection is not affected, a voip call works fine with no problems, and speeds are perfect. So only conclusion I can come to is that starts (or rogers?) routers have really started depriortizing icmp or something? Or maybe brantford is just messed up again. lol

Considering switching to Start

Hi, we have been on a Business FTTN DSL 16/1 package from Teksavvy for the past seven years give or take, located in Ontario. I'm considering switching us to a comparable package with Start and have a few questions: What are the dry loop fees for the various bands in this class of service? We are currently using a SmartRG SR505N modem in bridged mode. After the service is changed, would this need to be reconfigured, or do we just change the PPPOE login details on the router? What kind of downtime are we looking at while the service is switched over? We are currently on a Bell remote nearby our business, as we're too far away from the CO to get DSL service. This remote is 100% subscribed, no spare ports available. Is there any risk of somehow losing our port during the switch? Thank you.

Past 2-3 weeks, its been happening again, about 70% of the primetime results have been basically this. I know Sunday night is usually the worst, and it is tonight. I know there are other Brantfordians in here, you guys seeing the same? http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4796058272 30/5 RCable. IPTV?

I am a very satisfied Start customer of just over three years with no wish to change providers. I am, however, quite interested in acquiring a legitimate IPTV service along the lines of VMedia or Zazeen. The problem is, these services require you to use them as your Internet provider as well. Is Start contemplating anything along these lines for the near future (this year)? Is there a legit IPTV provider in Canada that I could use while retaining Start as my Internet provider?

Difference between residential and business service

What are the differences between the residential and business packages, as far as features/service, and perhaps TOS are concerned? e.g. if I want Internet in my business location, but just use it for some casual browsing during slow times (i.e. reliability is not a life-and-death thing), do I still need to get the business package?

Website broken?

I'm looking to get DSL for my shop, and am not getting anywhere on the Start website. It only shows me the "Home VDSL 25" info, and if I click on another package, it prompts me to type in my address. But when I do that it finds no matching one (not even my current home address, where I have Start already - it seems to only know Ontario), and I'm still stuck with the info for VDSL 25...
