Snow removal equipment and cabling does not mix

So the municipality came and removed a pile of snow from the end of our street we just happen to be at the end of the same, discovered that both the Bell and Cogeco lines are (were) buried sod deep between the curb and the guardrail (dead end street). The back hoe managed to catch on and sever both of them. Ticket has been sent to Start, municipality has informed me that they have run into this before and with Cogeco unless there is an account # associated with it they won't do anything, oh well luckily I have the means and ability to throw in a temp bypass cable to the house (pole drop is an unprotected straight through to the buried cable) , last time they took 4 days to come out and their temp line was in for well over 6 months.

Fibre Internet ONT

Would Start.ca fibre service provide a GPON/SFP transceiver that works with my EdgeRouter X SFP, or is the Adtran TA411 mandatory?

So what does this all mean for Start.ca and consumers?

Smartrg sr505n factory reset, doesn't fully reset.

Bought a new router (TP-Link Archer C59) tried to set it up, but was having some connection issues. So I called Start to help with setup of the router, spent nearly 2hrs on the phone step by step to get it setup and it didn't happen. Start's customer service was great that was not the issue. My issue is the modem running the current firmware after doing 3 factory resets, the modem never fully reset. It still retained my username and password and some of my settings. How can this be? Is there a proper procedure in doing a full reset? Thanks

Moving and want to get away from Cogeco

So I move the end of the month and seriously looking at Start. I can get same speed 'net as Cogeco plus home phone and it's cheaper than what I pay Cogeco for Internet alone. Problem is, the place I'm moving to requires active phone for the door buzzer but I won't have that until cable is activated so how'd I let the tech in?. Wondering if I bought the modem, ata adapter, paid for the service plus installation, would modem/ata be shipped and could I just install it myself? Thanks

[DSL] Connection dropping multiple times daily

Hello all, have been with Start for a couple of years now -- Currently experiencing an issue at both my connections (DSL in Burlington, Cable in Toronto) with internet disconnecting multiple times daily. It's driving me insane as I work from home often and I won't be able to do any calls while this is happening. The symptoms described are exactly the same as in this thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30131355-DSL-Losing-PPPoE-often Jan 23 10:19:31 unknown daemon.info pppd[32129]: No response to 5 echo-requestsJan 23 10:19:31 unknown daemon.notice pppd[32129]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.Jan 23 10:19:31 unknown daemon.info pppd[32129]: Connect time 60.3 minutes.Jan 23 10:19:31 unknown daemon.info pppd[32129]: Sent 13864922 bytes, received 333547424 bytes.Jan 23 10:19:31 unknown daemon.notice pppd[32129]: Connection terminated.Jan 23 10:19:35 unknown daemon.info pppd[32129]: Terminating on signal 15Jan 23 10:19:35 unknown daemon.info pppd[32129]: Exit. A call to Start netted me an agent who ran me through the regular steps, but couldn't come to any solution. She said my line stats were "good", but that my connection was logging upwards of 20 reconnection requests daily. I wonder if it's the same issue as TSI with their overloaded routers... when I notice the disconnection, it reconnects almost immediately when I click "connect" (though sometimes it'll take an extra couple of minutes...). Happy to provide account details to a rep so they can look at my line stats again...

[DSL] 50 Mbps VDSL in Ancaster?

$

Hello, I'm currently on 120 Mbps cable and was hoping to switch over to VDSL2 to avoid the crazy congestion in the area. The Bell and Start.ca websites show that 50/10 VDSL is available in my area, but when I called in the Sales person informed me they don't support bonded pair. I am a bit frustrated as the day before when I called in the sales person stated that 50/10 was supported in my area and I have already purchased a VDSL2 modem in hopes of switching over. Can I get a definitive answer as to whether 50/10 is available in my area? Thanks

Has anyone tried the SmartRG config file https://www.start.ca/files/CA_PBCA_2.5.0.14_698450e_SR505N_cfe_fs_kernel with the latest firmware (CA_PBCA_2.6.1.4_4d8d296_SR505N_cfe_fs_kernel)? I'm still using the config file provided by my previous provider and would like to make the switch to Start's.

Is something up with your usage counter? I don't seem to see any usage data for the last few days. I'm on unlimited so it doesn't worry me too much but I do like to check what my router reports against what you guys report. Thanks.

New Broadcom based Rogers TPIA modem available?

I see on a competitors website that they have listed the TP-LINK TC-7650 modem which is supposed to be a broadcom based DOCSIS 3.0 modem for Rogers. For those wishing to avoid the Puma based modems is this an option for the loyal customers at Start? :)

start.ca VOIP questions

Been a start.ca cable internet customer for years. Considering the VOIP service. Currently planning to buy a Panasonic KXP-TG600 set, in the hope that I can pair my existing Panasonic DECT 6.0 handsets to it. The call-block memory in my Panasonic cordless POTS system is now full of telemarketers and fundraisers. My plan is to use VOIP to forward these type of calls to a service that will play a tone indicating that my number is disconnected (or similar). I have read, though, that the KXP-TG600 system only has memory for 20 such numbers. Can I maintain a block list on the start.ca website, such that these calls will never ring through to my house? Or, is there another VOIP customer-premises system from another manufacturer, that will allow me to maintain a long block-list?

ETA on 250/20 in Cogeco land?

Anyone know when 250/20 will be offered in Cogeco land, specifically Oakville. Ebox offers it when I put my address in but for some reason Teksavvy and Start don't. I actually have 250/20 right now with Cogeco on a one year contract for $80/month which ends in October. I was hoping to move to Start after it ends and get the same thing if they offer it.

[rCable] Connection goes bad every few months

Start 60/10 service, DCM476 modem. Every 30 to 120 days, the connection will go to utter crap. Excessive latency, packet loss. Anything internet related becomes unpleasant to use. Check out the attached DSLReports line monitor graphs. Only power cycling the modem fixes the problem, and then it goes away for weeks or months until it rears its ugly head again. It's not a router issue. Modem signal levels are +10 to +12 dB downstream and 39.3 dB upstream. I must remember to check signal levels when this happens again. I'm going to call Start support about this issue, but anyone seen anything like this before?

[rCable] What's the current activation time for Start on cable in London?

$

I'm wondering if we're talking a week or a month at the current time. Also - can a TC4300 handle a 60/10 plan? Or do I need a TC4350 for that? I'm going to be signing up for the 30/5 plan, but in the unlikely occasion I want to go to the 60/10 plan say a year from now, it looks to me that the 4300 would still do the job - yes? And is there anything in the cards about Rogers ending support for either of those modems in the future (ie - a DOCSIS thing) ?
