Hello all
Three days ago I started having connection issues with Xbox live. I would get kicked constantly off the server.
Tonight, my IPTV is laggy and I'm experiencing auto stream drop-outs on my internet radio. Ookla speed test says everything is fine.
I rebooted my modem, router and switch.
I called Start.ca but being late Saturday night, I was on hold too long.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

[DSL] Lag spikes in Path of Exile
Hi,
Just wondering if someone could take a look at this WinMTR trace I did and let me know if something looks off? I see a certain hop that does go above 200ms every so often. Not sure if there is something I can do or if Start can do anything about it?

AWS US-East peering
Hi,
A number of Games (in my case PUBG), have setup their game servers out of AWS, particularly US-East and I've noticed that Start peers with Amazon out of Chicago which is kinda going the wrong way physically which doesn't help with latency.

You can see it travel from Toronto, to Chicago, then a 20ms jump as it goes back east to the coast
Is there any chance Start can look at peering with amazon out of either TorIX, NYIIX or DE-CIX NY to improve latency? :D

Alternate Premium TV package
What do all of you and, most importantly, Start, think of having alternative Premium TV Packages?
I propose grouping some/all of the following channels (whatever adds up to $10 in value) into a RealityTV-RerunTV Theme Pack and allowing the subscriber to substitute a different Theme Pack (like Movies, News, etc) for the same $50 cost. (Maybe even CraveTV for a total of $60).
I don't think that the competition would have anything like this for $50. It might attract more subscribers and reduce the number of subscribers switching providers for the best deals (or maybe not).
Most of these channels are now 90% low-budget reality TV or reruns of U.S. or Canadian Series that were originally on broadcast networks; some are nothing like they were originally. If you like them, keep the original Premium pack.
A&E (was a PBS-like channel originally - now reality shows),
Discovery (was a science channel originally - now reality shows [Bell Media even droppped Daily Planet last year ),
Bravo (reruns),
CMT (was Country Music Television - now reruns),
Lifetime (reality),
Paramount (reality),
MTV, MTV2, MUCH (not much music on these three anymore),
TLC (was The Learning Channel - nothing educational here),
Weather,
Game Show Network,
E!,
Vision

Quick q about StartTV
I am looking at possibly switching my mom to StartTV as rogers is being a bag of dicks and not willing to help her any more with tv/internet. She is on disability, and in all fairness, they have been willing twice now to help find ways to save cash. The short and curly is she'll be going from $115 a month or so to over $190 (she can't do this after all is paid for). Can she use StartTV with TekSavvy as her internet (it seems to be better priced, though I am not sure if bundling is an option)?

Disaggregated Cable?
I've noticed a couple of interesting tidbits in a couple different tracert's people have posted recently.
kitchener.tpia.start.ca

Is Start beginning to switch their cable (rCable only maybe?) to feed regional head ends under the disaggregated model?
Has anyone else seen these in their tracert's?

[TV] Unable to fast forward when I start watching a show that is recording
4 months in and I'm still having this problem, I can't be the only one.
I have a scheduled recording set up for Survivor every Wednesday evening at 8pm. I am usually able to start watching the show at around 8:15pm and will skip through commercials to catch up to the live show as the show is recording. I've had an issue since day 1 where I can sometimes skip through commercials but eventually will encounter an issue where the show will start over when I skip through commercials. Once it does this, I am unable to fast-forward through the episode to get back to where I was in the episode. If I try, the episode will completely freeze and I will be unable to watch it at all.
Once the episode finishes recording, I am able to play the episode without issue and can skip through commercials.
I've rebooted the box, cleared the cache on the app, uninstalled and reinstalled updates and still haven't had any luck. I've reported this to support multiple times now.
My internet is 150 down/15 up.
Is it just me?

[TV] Newbie questions about Start TV
We currently have Shaw Direct Satellite TV. There are 4 cables in from dish. Two to main Receiver/PVR. One to a bedroom HD receiver and one to a Non-HD receiver in office. Soon the non-HD receiver will no longer work. Seems Shaw are going all-HD.
We have Start Internet. It comes in via Cogeco cable and present service is, I believe just 15Mbps with a monthly 200GB limit. This raises a question: When I look for service at my address, slowest speed offered is now 40Mbps unlimited. Is 15Mbps no longer offered?
OK, now regarding Start TV:
- will our present 15Mbps service handle Start TV and Internet? Pr would we need to upgrade?
- Would we have to rent/buy three STBs because we have three TVs in separate rooms? Additional $30/month on top of $50-$60 for Premium plus a few channels that are missing that we watch.
- Is PVR a no-cost virtual system rather than hardware?
We are happy with our Start Internet service, but it looks like Start TV might be more expensive than what we have now.

[rCable] High amount of jitter during primetime
As the title says I am experiencing a high amount of ping jitter in the time frame of 8pm-12am.(It could proceed a little past 12am, but I am usually in bed by then.) My ping regularly jumps from 20ms to 100ms+. It makes any attempt to play an online game almost impossible.
My Gear:
Modem: Tp-link TC7650
Router: Edgerouter lite
Switch: Netgear 8-Port
PC: Windows 10 with all the latest updates.
Profile: 250/20
Modem stats: https://imgur.com/gtQoXyx
I've done almost all the troubleshooting steps, which includes; a hard reset of the modem, connecting directly to the modem to rule out router issues, testing pings before and after primetime, using different PCs, QOS to eliminate bufferbloat, as well as swapping out ethernet cables. The only thing I haven't done is a modem swap, but it doesn't seem like it is causing the issue because ping times are fine outside of the time frame specified above.
I think I have narrowed it down to the most likely culprit being the node I'm connected to being over-subscribed. One question I do have is if I were to reduce my speed profile is there any chance it would help reduce jitter? My limited understanding of how the network works, is that a certain amount of bandwidth is allocated per node and split between all homes on the node and by reducing my speed profile I could alleviate some of the bottlenecking happening at my local node.
I can post some traceroutes later as well, but from my testing they don't show the issue all that well because my ping could be stable during that time, while seconds later it's bouncing around.

Technicolor modem the cause of Xbox game disconnects?
Hello all
I am an avid Xbox gamer. Last summer, a new game called Armored Warfare was released to Xbox. Since day one the game has suffered random server disconnects which has seriously damaged the game's reputation.
Until a few weeks ago, I hardly ever experienced the issue myself. Now I can't do anything in the game without being booted off their server.
Since then, I have done everything possible to try and diagnose the problem without a solution. Today, I read that certain modems with the Intel Puma 6 chipset are being blamed for lag spikes and high latency during online gaming.
I recently switched from VDSL to cable and I have a Technicolor modem now. Is it possible that this is the issue?
Edit: I would like to exchange my modem for one that does not have this chipset.

I just noticed that Sports channels and Hollywood Suite channels are now offered a-la-carte.
Individual TSN channels are $15.
SN1 = $7, SNW = $20, SN360 = $7, other SN ch are $15. (Some were already a-la-carte)
Individual Hollywood Suite channels are $5.
That may work for someone who's only a Jays or Tennis fan and subscribes for a few months per year (with Basic).
